Deadly Mosquito-Borne Diseases are
Everywhere!
Mosquitoes carry West Nile Virus, Encephalitis, Malaria, Heartworm and
other deadly diseases. These diseases, infections and illnesses are now
found in nearly every part of the United States. Golf courses, zoos,
farm ponds, commercial properties and even theme parks contain many
water features which may be mosquito breeding sites. Typical breeding
places for mosquitoes include:
• Standing water • Irrigation ditches • Salt marshes
• Roadside ditches • Pastures • Floodwater
• Snowmelt pools • Woodland pools • Catch basins
• Storm water retention areas
Stop ‘em Before They Start!
MOSQUITO CONTROL is a highly selective microbial larvicide that kills
mosquitoes before they ever take flight, including those which may
transmit diseases. MOSQUITO CONTROL is produced from a naturally
occurring strain of
Bacillus thuringensis
subspecies
israelensis
(BTI)
bacteria. It produces a protein toxin (crystal) which, when ingested,
kills mosquitoes while they’re still in the larval stage. Death of
larvae is rapid, often occurring within one hour at field use rates.
Complete mortality occurs in the laboratory within 24 hours. Because the
MOSQUITO CONTROL product must be ingested to be effective, the product
does not affect pupae, adults or late larval stages when active feeding
has ceased. MOSQUITO CONTROL may be applied to any water sites except
treated, finished water reservoirs or drinking water receptacles.
Benefits of Using MOSQUITO CONTROL.
Proven highly effective. Fast acting. Lasts up
to 30 days. Broad range of applications. “Smart”
larvicide targets only. No adverse effects on people, plants, pets,
mosquito and black fly larvae fish or horses when used as directed.
Application Instructions:
MOSQUITO CONTROL granules should be applied at the rate of 2.5 to 10
pounds per acre. When larval populations are high, or water is heavily
polluted and/or algae are prevalent, use 10-20 pounds per acre. MOSQUITO
CONTROL should be applied uniformly with application spreader in the
first 18”of water depth around the circumference of the pond.
MOSQUITO CONTROL should be applied every 7 to 14 days. Longer
intervals may be possible where sufficient numbers of species which feed
off mosquitoes are present, since these are not affected by MOSQUITO
CONTROL and contribute to mosquito reduction. MOSQUITO CONTROL is
available as a granule in a 2 lb jar with shaker top and 10 lb and 40 lb
bags.
Effect on Non-Target Organisms:
MOSQUITO CONTROL is naturally occurring and has no adverse effects on
the environment when used as directed. It shows no cross resistance to
chemical larvicide's and is especially well suited for use in areas
where there is demonstrated resistance to chemical pesticides. MOSQUITO
CONTROL does not persist in soil or water. The protein crystals separate
from the aquatic environment and settle to the bottom, becoming food for
other microorganisms, absorbed into the soil or deactivated by other
organic particles.
MOSQUITO CONTROL has no toxic effects on beneficial insects such as
ladybird beetles, honeybees, mayflies, dragonflies, damselflies,
stoneflies, caddis flies and true bugs. In addition, no toxicity was
observed against crustaceans including copepod species, gambusia fish,
oysters, shrimp, crabs, mollusks, flatworms and amphibians when used as
directed.
Factors Affecting Performance:
Water conditions such as
temperature, pH,
free chlorine and some inorganic salts
may affect
performance of MOSQUITO CONTROL.
High levels of
organic matter
and
algae
provide alternative
food sources for mosquito larvae, which mean the higher labeled rates of
MOSQUITO CONTROL are required to assure control. Water habitats
containing
high levels of mosquito larvae
require a greater
dose of MOSQUITO CONTROL for effective larval control.
